For a few evenings each year Hyochang Park — an ordinary neighbourhood park in central Seoul most of the time — is lit and staged as a memorial to the Korean independence movement. Eight independence activists are buried here, including Kim Gu, and the programme builds around them: illuminated grounds, performances, exhibitions, guided commentary and hands-on activities. It runs into the night deliberately, so that the park reads differently than it does by day. Local schools, universities, veterans' associations and arts organisations each contribute their own programme rather than a single organiser producing everything.
