Sejong Center for the Performing Arts

세종문화회관 · Seoul

Seoul’s grand concert hall on Gwanghwamun Square, with the palaces on the doorstep.

The Sejong Center opened in 1978 and is the country’s best-known arts centre, a monumental stone building on Gwanghwamun Square facing the statue of King Sejong. The main hall seats about 3,000 over three levels and hosts orchestras, musicals and, increasingly, pop and jazz concerts; the smaller M Theater and chamber hall sit alongside.

It is a seated hall with proper acoustics, so concerts here feel very different from arena shows: this autumn it hosts the Seoul Jazz Festival’s SJF at the Theater series and a three-night run by the rapper CHANGMO.
