About

Admiral Yi Sun-sin — the naval commander who defeated a far larger Japanese fleet at Myeongnyang in 1597, and the most revered figure in Korean military history — was born in what is now Jung-gu, Seoul, and the district holds a birthday festival at the site. It is staged as a party rather than a commemoration: a giant birthday cake carrying 481 messages, a naval honour guard parade, an 'Iron Man Yi Sun-sin' contest for residents, and stage performances. A food zone brings together 20 of the district's restaurants, a flea market sells Yi Sun-sin merchandise, and the activity area runs from paper-hat making and calligraphy to VR horseback riding, turtle-ship puzzles and a Roblox birthday party.
