About
The sumungun were the soldiers who held the gates of the Joseon palaces, and this reenactment has run at Gyeongbokgung since 2002. It was reconstructed from a record in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty describing the gate-guard system introduced in 1469, and the costumes and weapons are reproductions of early-Joseon military kit. The ceremony proper runs at 10:00 and 14:00 in the plaza in front of Heungnyemun Gate; a separate gate-sentry ceremony runs at Gwanghwamun at 11:00 and 13:00, and there is an open guard drill at 09:35 and 13:35. All of it is free and outside the ticket gate, so you can watch without paying palace admission
Cancelled in heavy rain and on Tuesdays, when the palace closes.
