About
Twice a year the tide drops far enough to expose a 2.8 km strip of seabed between Hoedong-ri and the island of Modo, and for about an hour people walk across the sea on a path 30–40 m wide. It is designated Scenic Site No. 9. The phenomenon became internationally known in 1975, when the French ambassador to Korea — visiting to see the Jindo dog — witnessed it and described it in the French press as a modern parting of the Red Sea; a 1996 Japanese hit song about it still brings Japanese visitors every year
The festival programmes Jindo's intangible heritage alongside the crossing: Jindo Arirang, ganggangsullae circle dance, ssitgimgut shamanic rites, and Jindo drum dance. Free. The crossing window is tide-dependent and lasts about an hour — check the exact time before travelling.
