Namwon in North Jeolla is the setting of the classic tale of Heungbu, the kind younger brother rewarded by a swallow with a gourd full of treasure, and the city's Heungbu Festival is one of the region's oldest folk festivals, now in its 34th year. It runs from 9 to 11 October at Gwanghallu Garden, the pavilion garden at the heart of town. Highlights include a recreated Heungbu homestead market, thatched stalls of Jirisan farm produce, a K-food street, a 'golden gourd' event where gourds six to eight metres tall are cracked open, Joseon-era job experiences, a performance retelling the 1597 Battle of Namwon, changgeuk opera of the Heungbu tale, a farmers' music contest and traditional wedding demonstrations.
